MANGA EXPLORE EVERY GENRE

📖 What Is Manga?

Manga (mahn-guh) is Japan's version of comic books and graphic novels. Many are adapted into anime (a-nuh-may) — animated TV shows and movies.

South Korea has a similar format called manhwa (mahn-wa). Like American cartoons, manga and anime are not all for kids — they span every age group and genre imaginable.

⚠️ What to Watch Out For

Graphic violence: Action manga ranges from stylized fights to very gory visuals. Always check the rating before your child reads.

"Cute" doesn't mean safe: Some innocent-looking titles (The Promised Neverland, Made in Abyss) contain disturbing adult themes. Always verify the rating.

Unrealistic standards & tropes: Exaggerated body types, toxic relationship dynamics, and mature humor appear even in teen-rated titles. Use these as talking points with your child.

💬 Conversation Starters for Your Kids

Use these to open dialogue about what your child is reading or watching:

What do you enjoy most about this manga?
What lessons has this story taught you?
How does this story portray violence — does it bother you?
What would happen if you acted like one of these characters?
Do you notice any unrealistic portrayals of boys or girls?
Is there anything in this series you'd like to talk about?
